Fan Favorite Frances Tiafoe Falls At The Australian Open Melbourne-- On his 25th birthday the American and 16th seeded Frances Tiafoe brought power and touch to thrill the Melbourne crowd, however he would finish just short as he fell 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(11-9) to the 18th seeded Karen Khachanov in the third round Friday at the Australian Open.

Tiafoe overcame a slow start by taking the third set.

In set four the American struck an ace out wide while serving at 5-6 game point to reach a tiebreaker.

Tiafoe hit two down the line backhand winners, a down the line forehand winner and an ace down the tee to lead 5-1.

Khachanov struck a powerful serve out wide to Tiafoe's backhand to begin the final point of the match.

The American netted a final crosscourt backhand return to end the match after three hours and thirty-two minutes of play.

Although Tiafoe appeared to have entertained the crowd more with his outgoing personality and his mix of power and finesse, it was Khachanov who finished the match with the stronger serve and more consistent game which proved to be the keys of the tiebreaker.

For the day Khachanov hit 52 winners including 20 aces to 27 unforced errors.

Tiafoe struck 65 winners but ended the high level match with a costly 53 unforced errors.
