MIAMI--(lawntennismag.com) At the Sony Ericsson Open today third round play heats up as both Williams sisters, Venus and Serena
Williams of the USA take the courts. Defending champion Serena Williams will be fresh off winning Bangalore, her first singles
title of this year.
Also today two stellar matchups as new mother Lindsay Davenport of the USA meets second seeded Ana Ivanovic
of Serbia, and 32nd seed Feliciano Lopez of Spain takes on fiery Russian Dmitry Tursunov.
Miami, Florida, United States March 26-April 6, 2008
$3,770,000 | Hard court Day 5 Sunday | Third Round
Women's Singles: 3rd Round
Serena Williams (8) vs. Flavia Pennetta (27) These two players have once met once before with Pennetta actually winning in a walkover as Williams withdrew injured at Toronto
in 2005. Tied 0-0 head to head, Serena will pull ahead 1-0 after looking to build on her recent Bangalore title and 9-1 start to the year.
Winner: Williams.
Women's Singles: 3rd Round
Venus Williams (6) vs. Marina Erakovic Venus Williams faces another very young player today as she meets 20 year old Erakovic of Croatia, whom she has never played.
Erakovic reached the Memphis semifinals before being overpowered by Lindsay Davenport. Williams if on her game should do the same to
Erakovic today.
Winner: Williams.
Women's Singles: 3rd Round
Ana Ivanovic (2) vs. Lindsay Davenport (32) It's tough to pick a winner in this potential thiller and also a shame these two players must meet so early on in the tournament.
But until Davenport can get her ranking up higher, she will face more difficult draws. Davenport, 15-2 this year, has never played
Ivanovic, who is 16-3 this year, before. Ivanovic took last week's Indian Wells title while Davenport withdrew in the quarterfinals
injured. Davenport could win, but I think Ivanovic will be more consistent today.
Winner: Ivanovic.
Men's Singles: 3rd Round
Feliciano Lopez (32) vs. Dmitry Tursunov Lopez leads Tursunov 1-0 head to head, winning at Tokyo last year 7-6(10-8), 6-4. Both players have explosive games and I think
either could win today, but I'm picking Lopez to attack the net and bewilder Tursunov with lefty spin.
Winner: Lopez.
