The tournament is divided into two groups with Roddick being in the Red Group with world number one Roger Federer of Switzerland which presents an early meeting this week between the two players. Federer defeated Roddick in the 2007 US Open final at New York.

After taking the first set 6-3, Roddick was broken twice in set two. With the first break Daveydenko reached 4 all. Hitting harder and earlier groundstrokes with extreme angles, Daveydenko broke Roddick again at 4-5 to claim set two 6-4. Before walking to his chair, Roddick smashed his racket unto the court, which caused the frame to break.

In set three key some errors from Daveydenko along with determined play from Roddick decided the match. Roddick broke serve to reach 2-1 as Daveydenko netted a backhand volley on breakpoint. Roddick broke again to reach 4-1 with a forehand pass down the line. The following fist pump signaled Roddick's drive to win and as Daveydenko had left his best tennis in the first two sets, the match quickly faded in the end in Roddick's favor.

"I had one bad game in the second set where he got the break (but) I feel good. I feel healthy. I feel like I've been hitting the ball well in practice," Roddick said.
