In the match today, Zvonareva, seeded 8th, started with aggressive baseline play to take first set leads of 3-0 and 5-2. Williams however stepped up her game at 3-5 to save four set points and later reach the tiebreaker.
After Williams went ahead 5-1 in the tiebreaker, three errors from Williams and a Zvonareva crosscourt forehand winner evened the tiebreaker.
A Williams doublefault gave Zvonareva her fifth setpoint. Zvonareva would convert this one as her backhand slice would hit the net then fall over for a winner.
Williams, then played some of her best tennis of the week to take the next eight games in a row to go ahead 6-7, 6-0, 2-0.
Playing more consistently and with controlled aggression, Williams raced to a 5-2 final set lead. A Williams forehand crosscourt winner ended the match.
“I'm a little dissapointed,” Zvonareva said.
With her win today, Williams moves Monday from eighth ranked to sixth.
“I was so excited,” Williams said. “That was a hard-fought match. Next year I'm hoping to stay healthy and go higher (in the rankings.)”
