Rafael Nadal, Caroline Wozniacki Named World Champions

Rafael Nadal, Caroline Wozniacki Named ITF World Champions LOS ANGELES--World number ones Rafael Nadal of Spain and Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark have both been named as 2010 ITF World Champions despite taking different approaches towards the ITF year end award.

Nadal won grand slam titles at the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open in route to finishing the year with $10,062,983 in prize money.

Wozniacki however struggled

to turn in wins in the later stages at the grand slams.

The Dane posted her best grand slam result in September in a semifinal finish at the US Open.

But even though Wozniacki failed to win a grand slam, she took six WTA Tour titles for a record of 62- 17.

Nadal, who won an assortment of seven ATP Tour and grand slam titles, turned in an ATP Tour record of 71-10.

The fourth ranked Andy Murray of Britain was the only player to defeat Nadal twice this year.

Wozniacki did not face either former number ones Venus Williams of the USA or her sister the Australian Open and Wimbledon champion Serena Williams this year, but lost to the US Open champion Kim Clijsters of Belgium in their only meeting in the WTA Tour Championships final 6-3, 5-7, 6-3.

Serena Williams has not competed since winning Wimbledon in the summer due to a foot injury which has required two surgeries.
