Williams is also four matches away from a possible match-up versus her older sister and former world number one Venus Williams. The two sisters could meet in the Roland Garros semifinals Friday.
However either Williams sister’s road to victory became considerably tougher following match cancellations due to rain on both Monday and Tuesday.
A Williams would need to win a match a day Wednesday through Saturday in order to take the title on Saturday. Grand slam tournaments in normal weather conditions and scheduling allow a day off in between scheduled matches.
Should Williams reach Saturday’s final, she could meet the fourth seeded Garbine Muguruza of Spain in a rematch of the Wimbledon final which Williams won 6-4, 6-4.
In a shock 2014 second round Roland Garros encounter, Muguruza defeated Williams 6-2, 6-2 in a stunning upset in the duo’s only clay court meeting.
Williams has taken singles titles at Paris in 2002, 2013 and 2015.
