Number One Carlos Alcaraz Crashes Out In Astana Astana-- Tuesday at the Astana Open in Astana, Kazakhstan the world number one Carlos Alcaraz of Spain was unable to cope with the aggressive baseline play of the 66th ranked David Goffin of Belgium as he fell 7-5, 6-3 in the first round after one hour and 46 minutes of play.

The 19 year old Alcaraz ascended to tennis' top ranking after winning the US Open last month and today went up an early break of serve in set one after striking a down the line backhand volley winner at one game all 15-40 to lead 2-1.

However Goffin then broke serve twice in route to winning

the next four games to lead 5-2 behind powerful winners such as a forehand down the line winner and an overhead winner.

Alcaraz leveled the set at five games all before Goffin held serve to lead again 6-5.

Serving to stay in the set, Alcaraz found himself on the defense as he had been for much of the set.

Alcaraz struck an inside out crosscourt forehand wide to reach 15-30 before striking an inside out down the line forehand long to trail 15-40 and face set point.

Alcaraz netted a down the line backhand to end an extended rally and the set after 59 minutes of play.

Continuing in set two with his high level of play and deep groundstrokes, the 31 year old Goffin held serve in the opening game to lead 1-0.

With Alcaraz then serving down breakpoint, Goffin struck a powerful inside out down the line forehand which forced Alcaraz to hit a difficult crosscourt forehand while on the run which he netted to drop serve and trail 0-2.

The set remained on serve in the following three games with Goffin maintaining the lead at 4-1.

Alcaraz netted a crosscourt backhand before striking a crosscourt forehand long, his 31st unforced error of the day to reach 0-30.

The Spaniard then netted two forehands to drop serve and trail 1-5.

Alcaraz won the following two games to reach 3-5 before Goffin served for the match a second time.

At 30 all, Goffin struck a down the line backhand passing shot winner to reach matchpoint.

Alcaraz struck a down the line forehand volley wide to end the match; his only straight sets loss of the year.

Alcaraz finished the match with 34 unforced errors to 15 winners.

Goffin, a Wimbledon quarterfinalist this year, hit 19 winners to 23 unforced errors.
