US Open Defending Champion Emma Raducanu Falls In A Round One Stunner New York-- One year ago the 11th seeded Emma Raducanu shocked the tennis world by winning the US Open as a qualifier. However yesterday in New York City, the Brit struggled to cope with blisters on her right hand as well as the defense, net play and drop shots of the veteran Frenchwoman Alize Cornet as she fell 6-3, 6-3 in round one in a stunner.

The 32 year old Cornet, who had defeated the top ranked Iga Swiantek of Poland at Wimbledon earlier this year, entered the match as a known darkhorse capable of remarkable upsets.

The 19 year old Raducanu had lost in the second round of all three grand slams this year and had struggled with blisters on her right hand during the summer. Meanwhile Cornet had reached the quarterfinals at the Australian Open in January and round four at Wimbledon.

As such Cornet entered yesterday's match as a somewhat favorite to win. But to see the match unravel and the posted result still served as a stunner.

Cornet took an early 4-3 set one lead to open the match before the Brit hit a crosscourt backhand long to face breakpoint.

A doublefault on the following point sent Raducanu down another break of serve as she trailed 3-5.

Serving at 30 all, Cornet struck a down the line forehand passing shot winner in the longest rally of the match, a 25 shot rally to lead 40-30.

The Brit netted a crosscourt forehand to drop the set before taking a medical timeout to have bandages rewrapped to cover blisters on her right hand.

With the roof closing due to oncoming rain, Raducanu won three straight games from 0-1 to lead 3-1 in set two following several forceful baseline shots.

However Cornet mixed in more defense, dropshots and netplay to keep the Brit off balance as she took a 5-3 lead.

With Raducanu serving to stay in the match at 15 all, Cornet struck a crosscourt backhand dropshot winner to lead 15-30.

The Brit hit a swinging inside out down the line forehand volley winner to reach 30 all.

A down the line backhand volley hit wide by Raducanu ended the match as Cornet had won the last five games of the match which ended after one hour and 42 minutes of play.
