Jannik Sinner, Aryna Sabalenka Power To US Open Titles

Aryna Sabalenka, Jannik Sinner Power To US Open Titles New York--At the US Open earlier this month in New York City, the top seeded Jannik Sinner of Italy and the second seeded Aryna Sabalenka both used powerful serves and groundstrokes to take the singles titles.

Sinner defeated the 12th seeded Taylor Fritz of the USA 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 while Sabalenka defeated the 6th seeded Jessica Pegula of the USA 7-5, 7-5.

The 23 year old Sinner won his first career grand slam title in January at the Australian Open in Melbourne.

Sinner and Sabalenka became the first tennis players to win both the Australian Open and US Open titles in the same year since Steff Graf of Germany and Mats Wilander of Sweden in 1988.

the first ever world number one ranked Italian tennis player.

In the following month July, Sinner missed the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France due to tonsillitis.

Sinner at 23 is the youngest man ever to win both the Australian Open and the US Open in the same year.

The Italian can play offensive and defensive from both forehand and backhand in a lethal combination.

The 26 year old Sabalenka also won the Australian Open at Melbourne in January of this year as well as last year in 2023.

Known for her signature aggressive baseline groundstrokes and the audible grunts that accompany them, Sabalenka this month reversed a disappointing 2023 final round loss to the American Coco Gauff with a stunning display of power tennis.

Sabalenka, currently ranked number two, rose to her highest singles rankings a year ago in September of 2023 when she topped the rankings at number one after reaching the US Open final.

Sabalenka withdrew from Wimbledon in June with a right shoulder injury.

Then last month in August, Sabalenka returned to professional tennis and won the Cincinnati Open in Ohio with a 6-3, 7-5 victory also over Pegula in the final.

With their championship wins this year at both the Australian Open and the US Open,Sinner and Sabalenka became the first tennis players to win both grand slam titles in the same year since Steff Graf of Germany and Mats Wilander of Sweden in 1988.
